background

Peter has worked as a creative design director for a variety of architecture and urban design studios in Australia, China and the USA for over 30 years. This has included leadership and design roles with Gensler in San Francisco, Architectus in Sydney and Mitchell Giurgola Thorpe in Canberra. Learning from the best architects early in his career, allowed Peter to develop his own approach to architecture that balances the environmental, social and commercial needs and opportunities of each project. His expertise includes all forms of residential living and the aged care, commercial and health sectors.

He holds professional degrees in environmental design, architecture and ecologically sustainable development and has completed advanced research in the area of design for climate mitigation and adaptation in association with staff of the University of New South Wales School of the Built Environment. He is a member of various design review panels including the NSW State Design Review Panel, National Capital Design Review Panel in Canberra, the North Sydney Design Excellence Panel, Ryde Design Excellence Panel and Canterbury Bankstown Design Excellence Panel. He is the Chairperson of the Lane Cove Council Design Excellence and Review Panels. He is a frequent mentor to young architects for organisations such as the National Association for Women in Construction and has participated in a variety of industry award juries including the RAIA 2023 ACT Chapter Architecture Awards.

RESEARCH & WRITING

Since first beginning his studies, Peter has been exploring the role of outdoor spaces in architecture, including the use of courtyards, laneways and gallery spaces. He is interested in the capacity of these “in-between” spaces to connect people, moderate climate and contribute to the physical and cultural landscape of cities. He is currently researching and writing a book titled the Secret Life of Courtyards, a study of morphology and design patterns drawn from a variety of urban settings and climate zones across Australia. This research and learnings are regularly applied to the studio’s design work in the form of courtyard homes, vertical verandahs and the fine grain laneways and public domain space of inner city developments.
